Covid19 restrictions:

Currently in the UK public events or buildings are not permitted to open in a bid to slow the world-wide pandemic. Although restrictions are slowly being lifted and we emerge from lock-down, it is impossible at present to foresee how long certain emergency restrictions will continue for. If it still not possible to open our studios to the public, then the Print Festival event will be hosted across a number of virtual locations, enabling artists to continue to present their printmaking to the public.

Round Table / Table Ronde: Online (Virtual/Zoom)

An artist collective and the Victorian factory transformed:

A few years ago a group of South East Kent artists transformed a disused Victorian Dover factory into their creative studio workspaces. Dover based DAD (Dover Arts Development) artist Clare Smith discovered the vacant industrial unit and saw its potential as a much needed creative space within the town. Few traces remain of its previous industrial heritage dating back to 1900, except for an ancient wooden bench running the whole length of the ground floor studios. Spread across two floors, the spacious old building, which once manufactured, repaired and hired large marquee tents, now accommodates artists in light filled open plan workspaces.

Artists at the Dover studios work with a variety of media and techniques, but some use print in multiple forms as part of their professional practice. These range from traditional lino-cut relief printmaking techniques, through collotype to fluid mono-print experiments, and also chemically reactive/resistive processes.

The Dover Studio artists are proud to join with artists nearby in France and Europe-wide to celebrate together this ninth Fête de l’estampe annual series of printmaking events. Against the backdrop of an era of political divisions, pan-European collaborations across borders are of value and more important than ever; with this being our fourth consecutive year participating.

Clare Smith

Drawing is a way of slowing down time: I become fully absorbed in the process, often not feeling present in the world but present on the paper.

Clare Smith’s drawings frequently use printed marks as a starting point. She also works in monoprint and linocut and has experimented with nature printing, chine collé, cyanotype and solar plate etching. She rarely produces editions and when she does prefers to produce variable editions. For Smith the excitement of printmaking lies in its capacity for surprise.

Clare Smith: Shielding, lino variable edition print
Deborah Colam: Moonshine / Sky Gazing

Deborah Colam: Having spent over forty years of her working life as a Paper Conservator working on the printed images of the past seven centuries, she now enjoy the freedom to explore her own image making, no doubt influenced by this experience and studies of the history of this diverse branch of the Arts.

Mike Tedder

My images often map a journey from points ‘a’ to ‘b’, while sometimes revealing that possible onward route towards ‘c’.”

While studying art and studio practice at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, he received an introduction to the basic techniques and the excitement of printmaking. Since graduation the print has, in its various forms, developed into an essential part of his artistic practice. He has experimented with woodcut, etching and monoprint, while also exploring light sensitive emulsions for lens-less processes such as photograms and cyanotypes. Since a young boy armed with his very first camera, Mike Tedder has been fascinated by the photographic process, particularly Polaroid instant type emulsions and the ethereal nature of image making using failing expired and often extinct film/chemistry.

Mike Tedder:  Figure/De ontmoeting – woodblock, mixed-media collage 2021

Collage and pleasure in language, letters as signs, Words, turns of phrase, and literal translation are all intrinsic elements of personal expressionism within his artwork. An artist from an Anglo-Swiss background, he is passionate about Europe and excited by cross-border collaborations throughout the EU and beyond. During the Dover Studio Collective open studios he will be showing a selection of block prints, monoprints, lino-cuts and a range of print/collages new for 2021.

Kate Beaugié

Kate Beaugié makes artwork about light and dark.

She works in various mediums including installation, paint, burnt wood, gold leaf and water.

She also uses the alternative photographic process of Photogramy, which uses light sensitive photographic and without the use of a camera records the shadows of object, eg. a feather or water surface directly onto the paper using a flash of light in the darkroom.

Kate Beaugié: Waves 1 /  Malver Marriage

In this print festival she will be including some original photograms as well as giclée reproductions.
